European
Roulette – The Noble Game of Europe
Since
the game was first invented in France in the 17th century, roulette
always had a legendary lure about it. The idea of you standing
around the padded leather armrest, sipping your libation of choice,
while listening to the croupier call out “Faites vos jeux”
(place your bets), and feeling your heart start to pound, is the
dream we have all seen played out in movies and in television
shows.
European
Roulette Wheel
Made
famous and glamorous by the casinos of Monte Carlo, European
roulette has been the cause of many lost a fortune,
the fall of a wealthy descendent or heir from grace. But it has
also allowed some players to literally break the bank of a casino
playing this seductive game.
The
European style of roulette has 37 pockets or slots: the numbers
1 though 36 plus a single zero, “0”. Each pocket is
not only numbered but also alternates colors between red and black
with the exception of the single zero slot, which is green. The
American style wheel has an extra slot the double “00”
for a total of 38 pockets.
European
roulette games have the better odds for players than the American
style. American roulette has a house edge of 5.26% while the single
zero or European wheel has only 2.70%.
American
roulette wheels are most often found in the United
States and in parts of the Caribbean. But single zero roulette,
also called French roulette, is played though the rest of the
world and is the dominate roulette game on cruise ships and resorts.

A
major difference in how the European version is played the “En
Prison” rule. In European roulette, if you are
placing even bets and the ball lands on the single zero, you don’t
automatically lose your bet. Your wager is “imprisoned”
until the next spin. This is good and basically gives you second
chance to win.
Another
noticeable difference is that the numbering sequence is completely
changed on the single zero wheel. Here the number sequence are
set:
“0-32-15-19-4-21-2-25-17-34-6-27-13-36-11-30-8-23-10-5-24-16-33-1-20-14-31-9-22-18-29-7-28-12-35-3-26”
The
layout of the
roulette table or felt is slightly different. The European
layout is made of quality felt but the betting layout is somewhat
different. Like the American layout, the inside area is shaped
in a rectangle and is comprised of the individual figures for
each numbered slot on the wheel 1-36 but has a single zero on
one short side.
The
outside area has labeled betting boxes for red or black, odd or
even numbers, columns, the low or high numbers (1-18, 19-36) and
the 1st 12", "2nd 12" or "3rd 12" (1-12,13-24,
25-36). This side bet section is split into two and runs along
either side of the main layout. Each betting box is labeled by
its French name, but may have an English translation underneath.
European
roulette is gaining in popularity not only because more and more
players recognize the better odds it offers but also to the mystic
of the slower and the more elegant mode of play.
